Counselling, coaching or mentoring: which one do I need?

How the three differ, and why my sessions often mix them.

By Dave · October 2026

People often start a first session by saying “I’m not sure I need counselling exactly.” You don’t need to know. We work that out together, and because I’m an integrative counsellor I’m not tied to one approach. Still, it helps to know what each word means.

Counselling looks at where you have been

Counselling usually looks at what has happened to you, such as loss, anxiety, trauma or a relationship. It’s a confidential place to say things out loud, often for the first time, to someone who won’t judge you. You decide where each session goes. My job is to help you find your own answers, not to give you mine.

Coaching looks at where you are going

Coaching starts with now and looks ahead. What do you want to change, and how will you get there? We set goals and work out practical steps. It suits people who feel stuck rather than overwhelmed.

Mentoring walks alongside you

In mentoring we use the session to sort out ideas, look at other options and practise what comes next. It works well for people with an additional need, such as autistic people or people with ADHD, who want someone steady and practical to talk things through with.

You don’t have to pick one

My sessions can move between counselling and coaching when that helps. One week we might stay with something painful from the past. The next we might plan a hard conversation you’ve got coming up on Friday.

Still unsure?

That’s normal. Tell me roughly what’s going on and we’ll decide where to start at the first meeting. We agree the cost and sign a counselling contract then, before anything else.
